Target Audience and Focus on Competencies

The Atollo IZZI digital education resources are designed primarily for learners in the first four years of primary education, with a particular emphasis on students with learning difficulties and intellectual disabilities. The materials provide differentiated, accessible, and structured learning experiences, and are intended to be used flexibly based on the learner’s developmental level rather than their chronological age. This allows the resources to be effectively used by older learners whose educational needs align with early primary learning objectives.
The pedagogical focus of the digital units is on developing mathematical and digital competencies. These areas were identified through a comparative analysis of national curricula across partner countries as the most suitable for joint development, due to their shared learning outcomes, clear progression structures, and adaptability to inclusive education contexts.

Student Profiles and Support Needs

The Atollo IZZI digital learning materials are intended for students in the first four years of primary education, particularly those who benefit from adapted and differentiated support. They can be used in inclusive classrooms, special education settings, and support centres, and are also suitable for older learners whose developmental level aligns with early primary education.
To support teachers in selecting appropriate activities, the materials are organised into four learning levels that reflect different types of learning needs.
Level 1 is designed for students with profound and multiple learning difficulties who require intensive support, highly structured activities, repetition, and often direct guidance from a teacher or assistant.
Level 2 supports students with severe learning difficulties who benefit from clear step-by-step instructions, visual support, and repeated practice, typically with ongoing teacher assistance.
Level 3 is intended for students with moderate learning difficulties who can engage with more structured tasks and basic concepts, often working in small groups or with some guidance.
Level 4 targets students with specific learning difficulties, who are working close to lower primary outcomes and can often work more independently with clear instructions and structured support.
The levels are flexible rather than fixed, allowing teachers to select activities across levels based on individual learner needs, learning goals, and available support. This approach enables the materials to accommodate a wide range of learners and promote inclusive, accessible digital learning experiences.

Modular Level-Based Structure

The Atollo IZZI digital learning materials follow a modular, level-based structure designed to make the resources flexible and easy to use with learners who have different learning needs. The materials are organised into core learning modules, such as Numbers and Counting, which appear across all four learning levels.
Each module focuses on the same fundamental concept, but the activities are adapted to reflect different levels of complexity, independence, and expected learning outcomes. This means that teachers can work on the same topic with different learners, while selecting the level that best matches each student’s abilities.

At Level 1, activities are very simple and highly structured. They focus on basic recognition, sensory engagement, and participation, often with strong visual cues and minimal interaction steps.
At Level 2, the same concepts are explored through slightly more structured tasks that encourage learners to recognise patterns, make simple selections, or follow short instructions with support.
At Level 3, learners engage with the topic through more developed activities that require basic understanding, comparison, or simple problem-solving, often with some teacher guidance.
At Level 4, the activities become more complex and closer to lower primary learning expectations. Learners may work more independently and apply concepts through more varied tasks and exercises.

This modular approach allows teachers to differentiate instruction easily while keeping the learning focus consistent across the classroom. Students can work on the same module at different levels, progress between levels over time, or revisit earlier levels when additional practice is needed. The structure therefore supports inclusive learning environments, where activities can be adapted to a wide range of learner profiles.

Research-Based Development and Effectiveness

The Atollo IZZI digital learning materials were developed through research and practice, informed by a comparative analysis of national curricula, educational policies, and existing teaching programmes across partner countries. The focus was on mathematical and digital competence, which had strong overlap across the systems.
The materials were designed with the needs of learners with learning difficulties and intellectual disabilities in mind, ensuring accessibility, structure, and adaptability for various educational settings. Emphasis was placed on differentiation, usability, and classroom relevance for both inclusive and special education.
During the pilot phase in Croatia, Bulgaria, and Germany, feedback from teachers, specialists, and learners confirmed the materials’ effectiveness in promoting student engagement, enabling differentiated learning, and offering accessible tasks. Teacher feedback highlighted the materials’ practical value, especially when combined with teacher guidance.
The final version of the Atollo IZZI materials is based on both design planning and real classroom experience, optimized with input from pilot testing.

Key Points:

  • Developed through cross-country curriculum analysis
  • Focused on mathematics and digital competencies
  • Adapted across 4 learning levels
  • Available in 6 languages
  • Pilot tested in Croatia, Bulgaria, and Germany
  • Refined based on teacher feedback and classroom observations.

Technical Support and Access

The Atollo digital materials are accessible through the IZZI platform, which hosts structured, curriculum-aligned resources in mathematics and ICT. These materials are primarily web-based and designed to function as interactive digital learning modules rather than static files.
The platform includes a wide range of formats to support diverse learning needs, such as interactive activities (e.g., quizzes, drag-and-drop exercises, matching tasks), educational videos, and multimedia content. In addition, alternative formats such as audio narration, subtitles, and adapted text versions are provided to enhance accessibility for learners with special educational needs.
The materials are compatible with standard digital devices, including laptops, tablets, and desktop computers, and are designed to work within typical classroom digital environments. To ensure inclusive access, the platform includes built-in accessibility tools such as adjustable font size, dyslexia-friendly text, colour and contrast settings, and note-taking features.
For technical support, users are encouraged to rely on school IT services and platform guidance materials. During the pilot phase, some challenges such as Wi-Fi reliability were identified; therefore, it is recommended to ensure stable Internet.

Dissemination Activities Among Teachers

Teachers are encouraged to actively engage in the dissemination of the Atollo digital materials by sharing their experiences and insights with colleagues. The project fosters a collaborative, user-centred approach, with educator moderation playing a vital role to better meet diverse classroom needs.

Your questions answered

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

The main purpose of the Atollo IZZI platform is to support students who have difficulties in learning, helping them reach their learning objectives and make progress. It is designed to provide engaging, interactive resources and activities that facilitate understanding and mastery of key mathematical concepts and develop digital skills.

The educational content on the platform targets learners who learn at lower primary levels. In typical settings, these students would be aged 5-10 years old. However, the educational content can also be used by chronologically older students who have intellectual disabilities, when suitable. The platform can be used by teachers in the classroom, as well as by students at home with adult assistance. The platform is also suitable for both individual use and collaborative learning settings, depending on each student's age and abilities.

The Atollo IZZI platform offers a variety of interactive tools and resources to enhance learning in mathematics and ICT. Mathematical content is available at four different levels of complexity to support a wider range of learners. These include educational games, quizzes, animation videos, visual aids, and practical activities that help make abstract concepts more concrete. The activities are designed to engage students, providing real- life examples that facilitate understanding and retention.

Whether students can use the platform independently depends on their individual abilities and learning difficulties. While the platform is designed to be user-friendly and engaging, children who face more significant learning challenges may require support from parents/guardians, teachers or learning support staff. For students who can manage tasks on their own, the platform offers an opportunity for independent learning, allowing them to explore activities and resources at their own pace. However, for those who need more guidance, the platform should be used alongside adult supervision to ensure they get the most out of the experience.

Yes, the resources are free and available without restrictions in order to provide teachers and educators with activities to support various types of learners to reach their mathematical and digital learning outcomes. The resources were created as part of the Atollo Project, co-financed by the European Union. Registration and sign-up are not needed.

Registration or sign-up is not required. You have unrestricted access to all activities and resources in 6 languages. If a pop-up window appears asking you to create an account or enter a code, simply click the 'X' to dismiss it and continue your learning journey.
